Console Prototype

Design Background

The surgical power console was designed with the intention to power both an arthroscopic shaver and an ENT shaver with their respective foot pedal controls. The console also was designed with a touch screen and membrane overlay for ease of cleaning post-surgery.

Design Concept

For the prototype, thin sheet metal was selected as the housing material for quick turnaround time. The console houses a power supply, processing board, touch screen display, display board, various connectors for hand pieces and foot pedals, and a port for external power. The housing is made up of a four piece construction. All components are mounted to the base and front plates. Then, the top and back plates are installed after electrical components are connected. This allows for easy assembly and disassembly.

Design Analysis

Knowledge of sheet metal fabrication and assembly was needed to design the surgical power console for manufacturing. Using PEM nuts, the console was easily assembled using a drill with a screwdriver bit. Tolerance analysis of sheet metal components ensured that the console would properly assemble and its components would correctly mount. Heat transfer analysis was conducted to prevent overheating of power source during use.
